Founded by our pioneer batch of Economics undergraduates in AY2002/03, the society is the student representative body of all SMU undergraduates reading the Bachelor of Science (Economics) Programme. All Economics students in SMU are automatically a part of, and hence represented by, the SMU Economics Society. OIKOS aims to further the interests and welfare of all Economics students here at SMU.

In the aspects of academic and career development, the society strives to empower students with information, resources and opportunities that enable them to make informed choices regarding their education and careers. Apart from providing practical help, OIKOS organises student life activities to encourage a balanced student life here at SMU. Most importantly, the society aims to foster a strong sense of community spirit and for students to take away strong and lasting friendships throughout the course of their study.

PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS

SMU School of Economics (SOE) was established on 1 July 2002, with a mission to accelerate the growth of SMU by creating a world-class centre of research and teaching in economics. Economic research forms a key factor in the development of SMU as a foremost academic institution in generating cutting-edge research with global impact and producing broad-based, creative and entrepreneurial leaders for the knowledge-based economy.

OIKOS subsequently came about as the constituent body representing all SMU students under the Bachelor of Science (Economics) Programme. Over the past 20 years, all Management Committees have always pledged to serve and further the interests of the school population, in developing and nurturing students through our faculty-wide events and programmes. Under our Management Associate Programme (MAP), we also aim to develop potential leaders by providing our Year 1s with opportunities to lead and grow as individuals and as part of the community.

This year, the 20th Management Committee is looking towards growing the academic and career aspects of our student population, by organising workshops such as Intern-Readiness Workshop and our annual OIKOS Networking Night. To better the welfare of our students, we are also planning welfare drives and events such as our annual freshmen camp and pageant. We will be pushing our new initiative, Mental Wellness Week.

In line with our name OIKOS, meaning family in greek, we hope that through all of these, we are able to inculcate the OIKOS family spirit within our tight-knitted community. Therefore, we are looking forward to collaborating with long-term sponsors and partners in our upcoming events and programmes. Strengthening our relationships with our sponsors and partners is of utmost importance to us, and we hope that you can come on board in making OIKOS an even better place for the students.

Yours sincerely,

Chen JiaHui

President

OIKOS MASCOT - Oscar The OIKOS Wolf

Oscar Navy SOE Tshirt.png

Across generations of SMU Economics students, the symbol of a wolf has always been an iconic representation of family, pack and teamwork.

In 2022, our wolf logo has been refreshed to give it a more personable, adaptable and strong look -- representative of every SMU Economics student. The mascot seeks to bring the SMU Economics community together through a common symbol and identity.
