Founded by our pioneer batch of Economics undergraduates in AY2002/03, the society is the student representative body of all SMU undergraduates reading the Bachelor of Science (Economics) Programme. All Economics students in SMU are automatically a part of, and hence represented by, the SMU Economics Society. OIKOS aims to further the interests and welfare of all Economics students here at SMU.

In the aspects of academic and career development, the society strives to empower students with information, resources and opportunities that enable them to make informed choices regarding their education and careers. Apart from providing practical help, OIKOS organises student life activities to encourage a balanced student life here at SMU. Most importantly, the society aims to foster a strong sense of community spirit and for students to take away strong and lasting friendships throughout the course of their study.

PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS

Established on July 1, 2002, the SMU School of Economics (SOE) was founded with the objective of fostering the growth of SMU as a distinguished institution through the establishment of a world-class center for research and teaching in economics. As a natural extension, OIKOS emerged as the constituent body for all SMU students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Economics) Programme.

OIKOS, derived from the Greek word meaning "family," embodies the core values of our organization. We cultivate a close-knit community that nurtures a sense of belonging and mutual support among our members. Our primary mission is to serve as advocates for all students in the Bachelor of Science (Economics) Programme at SMU, ensuring that their voices are heard, their needs are met, and their potential is fully realized.

The Management Committee is committed to creating an inclusive and enriching environment for our members. We offer a diverse range of events and programs that span the entire faculty, providing opportunities for personal growth, skill enhancement, and meaningful connections. Through our Management Associate Programme (MAP), we empower Year 1 students to develop leadership qualities, inspiring them to become future leaders in their respective fields.

Our dedication extends beyond academic excellence, encompassing holistic development. This year, we have exciting plans in place to augment the academic and career prospects of our student body. Workshops, company visits, and networking opportunities will equip our members with the necessary tools to thrive in a competitive job market.

Furthermore, the well-being of our students is of utmost importance to us. We organize initiatives, events, and welfare drives that promote mental and physical wellness, ensuring that our members receive support throughout their journey at SMU.

As we embark on this exciting venture, we extend a warm invitation to sponsors and partners who share our vision. By partnering with us, you will play a vital role in the growth and success of our students, empowering them to become future leaders and catalysts of positive change.

Together, we foster an environment that nurtures learning, growth, and prosperity for our students. We express our deepest gratitude for the support we have received thus far and look forward to welcoming you into the OIKOS family.

OIKOS MASCOT - Oscar The OIKOS Wolf

Oscar Navy SOE Tshirt.png

Across generations of SMU Economics students, the symbol of a wolf has always been an iconic representation of family, pack and teamwork.

In 2022, our wolf logo has been refreshed to give it a more personable, adaptable and strong look -- representative of every SMU Economics student. The mascot seeks to bring the SMU Economics community together through a common symbol and identity.
